St. Elizabeth of Hungary started as a mission in 1944-45. Masses were celebrated in homes until a mission-style church was built and opened its doors on April 17, 1948. In 1981, a building fund for a larger church was launched to accommodate the growing parish. The first mass was celebrated in the current church on April 4, 1985. St. Elizabeth is in the heart of a tourist area with year-round parishioners and "snowbirds" who flock to enjoy the warm winter. St. Elizabeth counts about 3000 registered families. It has embraced parishioners from different ethnic backgrounds and masses are celebrated in English and in Spanish.
Feast Day: November 17. St. Elizabeth was born in 1207 to King Andrew II of Hungary and wife Gertrude. Her mother was killed when she was six years old, and she sought peace through prayer. She was married to Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, had three children, and lived a life of prayer and devotion to the poor. After the death of her husband on his way to the Crusades, she joined the Third Order of St. Francis. She used her wealth to build a hospital and cared for the victims. She died on November 17, 1231, and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1235.
One of the miracles associated with her is the Miracle of Roses.
